Privacy Policy
Last updated: 27 October 2026
StudyCrest is a note-taking app for students, on iPad, iPhone, Mac and the web, made by Max, an independent developer in Sydney, Australia ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information StudyCrest collects, why, who it's shared with, and the choices you have. If you have a question, email [email protected].
The short version
- Your notes are yours, and private. Notebooks, documents, handwriting, your calendar and your grades are stored in your StudyCrest account so they're the same on every device you sign in to. Only you can open them. We don't read them, sell them, or use them to train AI.
- We only get what you send. When you use an AI feature, the page or text you chose is sent to our server and to Anthropic (the company that makes Claude) to work out the feedback. Nothing is sent until you tap a button that uses AI, and only after you've allowed AI checking.
- No ads, no tracking, no selling. We don't sell your information, show ads, or use tracking or advertising tools.
- You're in control. You can turn AI checking off, leave study groups, stop parent reports and delete your account from inside the app.
Who can use StudyCrest
StudyCrest is for students aged 13 and over. If someone tells us they're under 13 when they sign up, StudyCrest stops there and deletes their account and anything they entered. If you're under 18, please check with a parent or guardian before using StudyCrest. Parents and guardians can contact us at any time to ask what we hold about their child or to have it deleted.
What we collect and why
Your account. Your email address, the name you give us, and how you sign in (email and password, Sign in with Apple, or Google). If you use Sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we only see Apple's private relay address. We use this to run your account and to contact you about it.
Your profile. Your age group (13 to 15, 16 to 17, or 18 and over), study level, subjects, how much help you like (hints or full answers), and when you allowed AI checking. We use this so the feedback suits your level, to keep younger students safe, and to show the right subjects.
Work you send to the AI. When you use a feature that needs AI (checking steps, explanations, hints, marking, turning handwriting into maths, essay feedback, the AI checker, the rewrite tool, or Test Predictor), we receive what that feature needs: for example a picture of the page or lines you selected, the text you selected, a test notice or past paper you added, or your answers to a predicted test. We also send your subject, study level, age group and help level, so the answer fits you. We don't send your name or email with it. We use this only to produce the result you asked for.
Saved AI answers. We keep a copy of each AI answer for up to 7 days, so asking the same thing again is instant and doesn't use up your weekly limit.
Usage records. For each AI request we record which feature you used, when, whether it counted towards your weekly limit, whether it was a Deep check, how much it cost us, how many mistakes were found, the kinds of mistakes, and any marks. These records don't contain your work. We use them for the free weekly limit, Pro's weekly Deep checks, fair-use limits, the weekly parent report (if you turn it on), and to keep our costs in check.
Your notes and study data. To keep your devices in step, your account stores your notebooks, documents, handwriting, typed text, pictures, scanned and imported PDF pages, folders, favourites, review queue, marking history, assessment calendar, grade calculator, predicted tests and your answers, and study timer sessions. Pictures and scans are kept in private file storage that only your account can reach. We use this only to sync and back up your work for you. We don't look at it unless you ask us to help with a problem, or the law requires it.
Subscriptions. You can subscribe to StudyCrest Pro or Max in the App Store or on the StudyCrest website.
- In the App Store, Apple tells us which plan you have, its transaction number, whether it's active and when it renews or ends. Apple handles the payment.
- On the website, Stripe handles the payment. Stripe tells us your Stripe customer number, which plan you have, whether it's active or in a free trial, and when it renews or ends.
Either way, we never see your card or bank details.
Study groups. If you join or create a study group, we store the group's name, its members, and your display name (your first name and last initial). We also store the notebooks and predicted tests you share with the group. A shared predicted test contains the questions only, never your answers or marks. Everyone in the group can see what's shared in it.
Parent reports (optional). If you turn on weekly parent reports, we store your parent's email address, your time zone and whether your parent has confirmed. Reports start only after your parent confirms by email, and they contain counts only (for example, how many pages were checked), never your work.
Reports and safety checks. If you report an AI answer or a study group, we store your reason, any note you add, and the AI answer you reported. If an AI request raises a safety concern, StudyCrest shows support information instead of feedback, and we record the kind of concern, your age group and the feature, but not what you wrote.
Technical logs. Like most online services, our hosting provider keeps short-term technical logs, such as IP addresses and error messages, to keep the service secure and fix problems.
What's kept on your devices
Each device you sign in to keeps a copy of your notes so you can keep working without a connection; changes sync when you're back online. On the web, this copy is kept in your browser's storage on that computer, along with what keeps you signed in. Signing out removes it from that browser. StudyCrest doesn't use cookies for tracking or advertising.
These stay on your device and aren't sent to us:
- reminders for your assessment calendar (they're scheduled by your device)
- the test notice and past-paper pictures you add to Test Predictor (only sent to the AI when you ask it to predict a test)
- your study timer while it's running, and your app settings
Handwriting search uses Apple's on-device text recognition. StudyCrest only uses your camera or photos when you choose to scan, take a picture or add a photo.
Who we share information with
We share information only with the services that run StudyCrest, and only what each one needs:
- Anthropic (United States), which provides the Claude AI. It receives the work you send to an AI feature, with your subject, study level, age group and help level. Under Anthropic's commercial terms it doesn't use this to train its AI models. See Anthropic's privacy policy.
- Supabase, which hosts our database, your synced notes and file storage, and our server in Sydney, Australia, and sends account emails such as password resets.
- Stripe (Stripe Payments Australia and Stripe, Inc. in the United States), only if you subscribe on the website, to take the payment and manage the subscription. See Stripe's privacy policy.
- Cloudflare (United States), which hosts the StudyCrest website and web app. Like any web host, it handles technical information such as IP addresses to deliver the pages and keep them secure.
- Apple, for App Store purchases, Sign in with Apple and notifications.
- Google, only if you choose Continue with Google, to sign you in.
- Resend (United States), which sends the weekly parent report emails, and nothing else.
- People in your study groups, who see your display name and what you share with the group.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or if we need to protect someone's safety.
Information sent overseas
Our database is in Australia, but some of the services above are in other countries, mainly the United States. When we use them, your information is protected by our agreements with those companies and by their own privacy commitments.
How long we keep it
- Your account, profile and usage records: until you delete your account.
- Your notes and study data: until you delete them or your account. When you delete something, it's removed from our server; a small marker saying it was deleted (with none of its content) is kept so your other devices know to delete it too.
- Subscription records: until you delete your account, except what we must keep for tax and accounting law.
- Saved AI answers: up to 7 days.
- Your parent's email: until you turn parent reports off or delete your account.
- What you share in a study group: until you remove it, the group is deleted, or you delete your account.
- Reports and safety records: kept after you delete your account, but without your name, email or account, so we can keep improving safety.
- Backups: copies in our hosting provider's backups are removed as those backups expire, usually within 30 days.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account in Settings → Delete account, in the app or on the web. This permanently deletes your account, profile, synced notes and files, usage records and saved AI answers from our server, along with your study group memberships, any groups you own (and everything shared in them), and the notebooks and predicted tests you shared into other people's groups. You can also choose to erase the copy StudyCrest keeps on that device.
Classmates who already downloaded a notebook you shared keep their own copy. Deleting your account cancels a subscription you bought on the website straight away. It doesn't cancel an App Store subscription: cancel that in your device's Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
Your choices and rights
- AI checking: turn it off in Settings → Allow AI checking. Nothing is sent to the AI while it's off.
- Parent reports: turn them off in Settings at any time. Your parent can also stop them from any report email.
- Study groups: leave a group, or remove something you shared, at any time.
- See, correct or get a copy of your information: email [email protected] and we'll reply within 30 days. You can change your name and study level in Settings yourself.
We aim to handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please contact us first so we can fix it. If you're still not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to object to how we use your information, to ask us to limit it, and to complain to your local data protection authority.
Keeping your information safe
Everything between the app, the website and our server is encrypted, and our hosting provider encrypts stored data. Each student can only reach their own information on our server, our AI key never leaves the server, and passwords are stored securely by Supabase rather than by us. No system is perfectly secure, so if we ever find out about a breach that affects you, we'll tell you and, where the law requires it, the regulator.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change matters, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
